Those are great ideas, Tim and Mark! I forgot to set up shared folders this year, but I will. I also really like the idea of a time-stamped spreadsheet with all the assignments on one document! So many awesome possibilities with Google Docs (or should I say Drive.)

I’m glad I signed up to get email notifications of future comments on this blog post.

I’m having my students use GDocs in my high school chemistry class. I have students use the big blue SHARE button to allow anyone with the link to comment (or edit) their document. Then, and here is the magic step, I have them paste their link into a Google form I set up to collect submitted assignments (Name, class, link to their document). I get a time-stamped spreadsheet with links to all my students’ lab reports on a single sheet. I simply follow the link to their document, add comments, and score them. No emails to deal with, no searching folders for new submissions, no “lost” assignments, and a one page archive of all students’ work.

I try to be very protective of my one 45 minute planning period. Before kids I would spend 10 minutes catching up with teammates, getting coffee, etc. Now I make a bee line for my room, shut my door, grab my coffee, and try to plan or correct as much as I can. If someome tried to set up an IEP meeting I put my foot down and say that’s my planning I can’t make it. try another time or do it without me!

Thank you for your excellent post. I’m a high school English teacher, and this was my first year using Google Docs across all my classes. My experience was very similar to yours.

Specifically, I really hated getting all the notifications, but I never thought about setting up a filter. Next year, I will. (I really wish you could change those settings in a more global way!)

In addition, having students set up a shared folder is definitely the way to go. My students each had a peer editor and an online writing mentor. It was much easier to share folders than having the student share each document with multiple people every time.

Thank you for all the great feedback. I am developing a post that demonstrates how I organize my Google Docs with student work. I hope to have it up soon.

Przemek – I would be interested in cooperating on how to use GDocs at the university level. What do you have in mind?

Denise – Thank you for your thoughts on using Docs with your students. While I have not specifically told students to avoid communicating with me via GDoc notifications, they do know that I filter and archive notifications, but don’t really read them. Students email me directly if they want to communicate with me. Do students include general messages with their notifications or is it more document specific?

Larry – Thank you for the suggestion. I’ve been looking into ProfHacker and how to submit, and I’m working on finding the right people to contact. If you have any suggestions on that or other sites, I’d appreciate it.
